Photography permits
Navigating photography permits in Morocco
Morocco is one of the most visually diverse destinations in the world. Its landscapes shift from vibrant souks and historic medinas to the vast Sahara and dramatic coastlines. No wonder international photographers, fashion brands, and editorial teams are drawn here. But before a single shot is taken, one step is non-negotiable: securing the photography permit.
Why every project needs a photography permit
In Morocco, all professional photography projects are subject to permit requirements, regardless of scale or purpose. Whether you are planning a commercial campaign, fashion editorial, documentary stills, or branded content, authorization is mandatory. This permit is not limited to public spaces—it applies across the board and private venues or properties.
Without it, productions risk penalties, delays, equipment confiscations or being stopped altogether. With it, your team benefits from:
- Legal compliance – complete alignment with Moroccan law.
- Access – authorization to shoot in locations where restrictions may apply.
- Efficiency – smoother collaboration with local authorities.
- Credibility – recognition that your project is appropriately registered and approved.
The administrative process: How it works
Photography permits in Morocco are managed by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Ministère de la Jeunesse, de la Culture et de la Communication). The procedure involves submitting a clear and complete file for review. Typically, your application must include:
- Project description – purpose of the shoot and intended use of the images.
- Detailed schedule – exact dates and duration.
- Location list – all places where photography will take place.
- Crew details – names, passport copies, and contact information.
- Equipment list – cameras, drones, and other gear.
Processing times can vary. Smaller projects may be approved relatively quickly, while larger campaigns or projects involving multiple locations can take longer. Incomplete files often cause unnecessary delays, so preparing thoroughly from the outset is essential.
We advise applying at least three weeks before travelling. If your team requires entry visas for non-exempt countries, it is best to apply up to two months in advance of your travel into Morocco in order to avoid surprises, especially if you are required to submit your application in person at a Moroccan embassy.
That said, many nationalities are exempt from visa requirements and can enter Morocco without prior approval. Please check what applies to your case directly on the official government website: https://www.acces-maroc.ma/
Note that to bring in equipment with an ATA carnet into Morocco that you need to have your photography permit with you at the time of passing the Moroccan customs. We advise not to bring a drone into Morocco unless you have obtained a temporary importation permit. For short-term shoots, it is advisable to rent a drone together with a licensed local operator.
